St. Thomas Aquinas High School Fiesta Celebration

Ordot, Guam – Students, faculty, and staff of St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic High School (STA) honored its patron, Saint Thomas Aquinas, on January 28, 2010.  Nine days prior to the fiesta, family and friends of the STA community joined in praying a Novena to St. Thomas Aquinas.  The celebration of his life and works culminated with Mass at San Juan Bautista Church, presided by Most Reverend Anthony Sablan Apuron, OFM Cap., D.D., Metropolitan Archbishop of Agaña, and concelebrants Msgr. James Benavente, Msgr. David I.A. Quitugua, Msgr. Brigido Arroyo, Fr. Val Rodriguez, Fr. Karl Vila, Fr. Dan Ferrandiz, Fr. James Bejer, and Deacon Jeff Barcinas.

After the Eucharistic celebration, Dr. Diambra-Odi, Principal, welcomed the guests: the Honorable Jesse Gogue, Mayor of Ordot-Chalan Pago, a number of Catholic School administrators, members of the STA Advisory Board, members of the clergy, parents, and friends.  In recognizing the accomplishments of the students, Dr. Odi also acknowledged the role of the parents in their child’s success: “We are proud of the partnership between the school and the home, partnership that results in student success. As an example, when over 92% of parents participate in parent-teacher conference, more than 82% achieve honor roll status.” Certificates were awarded for Perfect Attendance, Principal Award (GPA of 87 to 91%), and President Award (GPA of 92% and above).

The program continued with student video presentations: “On the Life of St. Thomas Aquinas” by Aaron Quitugua, “On the Works of St. Thomas Aquinas” by Justine Denusta, and “Why Is St. Thomas Aquinas Our Patron?” by Lucas Shimizu.  STA choir and band ensemble, Concentus, performed St. Thomas Aquinas, My Alma Mater, the school theme written and composed by Mr. Norman Babia.  From the church, a procession followed and the celebrants gathered at the school lobby for prayers and received Archbishop Apuron’s blessing.

The Fiesta celebration included a trivia quiz game on the life of St. Thomas Aquinas and concluded with a luncheon in the Prayer Garden, compliments of the STA parents and school staff.
