St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic High School Receives Accreditation

On July 17, St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic High School received official notice of its accreditation by the Accrediting Commission for Schools, Western Association of Schools and Colleges, WASC. The school was granted initial accreditation during the WASC Summer Commission meeting. The term of the accreditation is for three years and will run through June 30, 2012-2015.

According to WASC, “A school beginning the accreditation process with WASC following the required initial visit can be granted either candidate or initial accreditation status, each of which carries a maximum term of three-years. The Commission grants a term of accreditation that shows a strong correlation to existing student achievement results and growth and current programmatic and operational actions based on the WASC criteria and accreditation term factors as noted in the content of the visiting committee report and the term recommendation of the visiting committee.”

Dr. Diambra-Odi, principal, referring to a comment from the Initial Visiting Report states, “I believe this comment sums up the extraordinarily positive experience we had during the initial visit and speaks to the collective commitment of the students, their families, faculty, staff, administrations, advisory board and the Catholic Church on Guam to the future success of St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic High School.”

The comment by Initial Visit Chair Dr. John Collins refers to the overall school environment and goes, “The school has achieved a culture of learning, the major features of which are: students’ above average capacities for learning/achievement; school personnel’s high regard and high expectations for students as persons and as academic achievers; parents who are fully engaged as educational partners with St. Thomas Aquinas; and the governance body (Church) that ensures the orientation of school learning toward its foundations in truth, in charity and in service to others.”

Additional information about the accreditation process including the listing of St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic High School can be found at www.acswasc.org or by contacting WASC at the address above.
